In a high-stakes WBO welterweight title eliminator at The Forum, Juan Manuel Marquez proved once again why he’s one of Mexico’s finest pugilists. With skill, grit, and explosive precision, Marquez secured a unanimous decision over the always-tough Mike Alvarado in a thrilling 12-round clash that featured knockdowns, blood, and a battle of wills.

Returning to the historic Inglewood venue after a 15-year absence, Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) dictated the pace early, using sharp footwork and crisp combinations to nullify Alvarado’s offensive rhythm. From the opening bell, the 40-year-old veteran showed he had plenty left in the tank, schooling the younger Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) with punishing counter shots and ring generalship.

Alvarado, entering as a slight underdog at 143.2 pounds, struggled to close the distance against Marquez’s trademark timing. A cut under Alvarado’s eye opened mid-fight and only worsened as Marquez picked his shots with laser-like accuracy.

The eighth round brought the first of two dramatic moments: a thunderous counter right from Marquez sent Alvarado tumbling beneath the ropes. The Denver native rose to beat the count, but the momentum had clearly shifted. Still, Alvarado answered back in the ninth, landing a right hand that dropped Marquez, albeit briefly, sending a shockwave through the pro-Marquez crowd.

However, the knockdown only served to ignite the Mexican great. Marquez roared back with precise combinations, further battering Alvarado’s swelling face and reclaiming control.

Judges Robert Byrd (119-108), Julie Lederman (117-109), and Max DeLuca (117-109) all scored decisively in favour of Marquez. The CompuBox stats told the same story: Marquez landed 44% of his 627 punches, including a blistering 57% of his power shots.

Though Alvarado fell short, his resilience earned him respect, and his knockdown of Marquez will be remembered as a flash of heart amid adversity.

Boxing returned to The Forum in style, and Marquez, ever the technician and warrior, delivered a masterclass in front of a roaring crowd.
