Saul “Canelo” Alvarez reclaimed his position atop the 168-pound throne Saturday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but it came with more yawns than fireworks. In a bout that will be remembered more for its lack of drama than any display of dominance, Alvarez earned a unanimous decision over William Scull to recapture the undisputed super-middleweight championship.

Despite the victory, the Mexican superstar was visibly frustrated throughout the 12-round chess match that never quite became a fight. Scull, undefeated before this bout, spent most of the evening in reverse, using lateral movement and clinches to nullify any offensive momentum from Alvarez. The Cuban’s evasive strategy left the crowd restless and the judges squinting to score rounds.

Alvarez, now 34, attempted to impose his trademark body assault, but was met with little opportunity. While he landed the heavier punches when given the chance, CompuBox numbers told the story: just 445 total punches thrown between the two — a historic low for a 12-round bout. The final tallies read 115-113, 116-112, and a wide 119-109, all in favour of Alvarez, who improves to 63-2-2.

Canelo was disappointed in the ring after the decision, clearly dissatisfied with the lack of engagement. His irritation matched that of the crowd, and even future opponent Terence Crawford, who was seen shaking his head ringside as he waited for something — anything — to happen.

But now, with business settled, the stage is set for a monumental clash: Canelo vs. Crawford, September 12 at the 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The matchup promises everything Canelo-Scull lacked — intensity, aggression, and legacy-defining stakes.

With the undisputed super-middleweight title now around his waist again and one of the sport’s pound-for-pound elites on deck, Alvarez has one more chance this fall to silence doubters and reignite his flame.

Under the bright lights of T-Mobile Arena on Mexican Independence Day weekend, boxing’s reigning monarch Saul “Canelo” Álvarez delivered yet another clinical masterclass, dismantling the previously undefeated Edgar Berlanga over 12 punishing rounds to retain his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight crowns.

From the opening bell, Canelo asserted command, dissecting Berlanga with surgical precision. A crisp left hook in the third round sent the New Yorker to the canvas—marking the bout’s lone knockdown and a turning point that confirmed what many expected: Berlanga had stepped into a level he wasn’t quite ready for.

Alvarez, now 62-2-2, controlled the rhythm, range, and narrative of the fight. His jab was a piston, his counters sharp, and his defence impenetrable. Berlanga, to his credit, showed grit. He got up quickly from the knockdown and never backed down, but the gulf in class was evident. While the Puerto Rican-American slugger talked a bold game in the lead-up, he found more success trading words than landing punches.

Judges saw the bout 118-109 (twice) and 117-110, all in favour of Álvarez, whose measured, mature approach overwhelmed the younger fighter. The victory marks Canelo’s fifth straight title defence to go the distance and reaffirms his status as the undisputed force at 168 pounds—even without the IBF belt, which was stripped after he declined to face mandatory challenger William Scull.

Though Berlanga (22-1) survived all 12 rounds and showed flashes of courage, he struggled to match Álvarez’s timing and ring IQ. A missed wild swing that sent him off balance and a warning for a headbutt only added to the evidence that he was outclassed.

With Berlanga dispatched, speculation now turns to what’s next for the Mexican superstar. Will it be a high-stakes rematch with Dmitry Bivol, the only man to beat Álvarez in the past decade? A domestic clash with David Benavidez? Or the potential blockbuster crossover with pound-for-pound standout Terence Crawford?

For now, one thing is clear: Canelo Álvarez remains the king at super middleweight—celebrating yet another Mexican Independence Day weekend with a dominant win and leaving fans and foes alike asking the same question—who, if anyone, can stop him?

Before more than 73,000 roaring spectators at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Canelo Álvarez reaffirmed his status as boxing’s pound-for-pound king, forcing Billy Joe Saunders to retire on his stool after eight absorbing rounds in their super-middleweight unification clash. The victory added Saunders’ WBO title to Álvarez’s growing collection of belts, unifying the division in dominant fashion.

From the opening bell, the contrast in styles was clear. Álvarez, in his familiar measured rhythm, stalked forward with heavy hands and subtle defensive movements. Saunders, fighting from his wide southpaw stance, aimed to frustrate and counter, relying on slick movement and a crisp jab to keep the Mexican at range. For much of the early action, it was a chess match—Álvarez’s thudding body shots against Saunders’ busy jab and lateral movement.

The early rounds leaned towards Álvarez, whose compact defence allowed him to close the distance and land to the body with trademark precision. Saunders responded well in the middle sessions, finding success by doubling his jab and pivoting away from danger. At times, he even drew cheers from the travelling British supporters, darting in with quick combinations and then gliding clear of retaliation.

But behind the numbers and feints, Álvarez’s pressure was building like a slow tide. He showed patience, cutting off the ring rather than chasing, forcing Saunders to circle into his power side. By the sixth and seventh rounds, the Mexican champion was landing more cleanly, particularly with the right uppercut—a punch he had been measuring all evening. Saunders, though game, was beginning to show signs of fatigue under the sustained assault.

Then came the moment that changed everything. Midway through the eighth, Álvarez slipped inside a jab and launched a thunderous right uppercut that crashed into Saunders’ face. The shot immediately altered the tone of the contest. Saunders backed away, his right eye visibly damaged. Though he managed to survive the remainder of the round, it was clear he was in distress. When the bell rang to start the ninth, his corner waved it off—later confirmed to be due to a fractured orbital bone.

The ending was as clinical as it was cruel. Up until that decisive blow, the fight had been competitive, with many at ringside scoring it close. But Álvarez’s power and patience ultimately proved too much for the slick Englishman. CompuBox data supported the story: Álvarez landed 73 of 206 punches (a 35% success rate) to Saunders’ 60 of 284 (21%). More tellingly, over half of Álvarez’s power shots found their mark, a testament to his timing and accuracy.

As the referee waved it off, the crowd erupted, celebrating a performance that balanced ferocity with composure. Álvarez saluted his fans, his collection of belts gleaming under the arena lights. Saunders, meanwhile, was taken to hospital for precautionary checks but had earned respect for his skill and resilience across eight testing rounds.

In the end, one fighter’s precision eclipsed another’s finesse. At AT&T Stadium, Canelo Álvarez defeated Billy Joe Saunders via eighth-round retirement, sealing his place as the unified super-middleweight champion of the world.

On September 15, 2018, boxing fans packed the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, to witness the long-anticipated rematch between Saul “Canelo” Álvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Dubbed Final Judgment, this middleweight championship clash delivered 12 rounds of nonstop, high-stakes drama, culminating in a razor-thin majority decision win for the Mexican superstar.

This sequel came with baggage. Originally set for May, the bout was postponed after Álvarez failed a pre-fight drug test and served a six-month suspension. With tensions high and legacies on the line, both men returned to the ring ready to rewrite the controversial draw from their 2017 encounter.

Unlike their first meeting, Canelo came forward from the outset. Known for his counter-punching, Alvarez flipped the script—meeting Golovkin head-on with sharp body shots and calculated aggression. Golovkin, ever the pressure fighter, looked to control distance with his jab but struggled early to impose the same dominance he had in their first contest.

The early rounds belonged to Canelo. He dictated the pace and found a home for his power punches, particularly to the body, landing 46 body shots compared to just six from Golovkin. By the midpoint, all three judges had Canelo ahead 87–84, signalling a shift in momentum.

But Golovkin wasn’t done. In the championship rounds, the Kazakh warrior surged back. Round 10 featured his hardest punch of the night, visibly hurting Alvarez. Round 11 saw Canelo retreating for the first time, clearly winded as Golovkin poured on pressure. The final round was a war—both men trading leather in the centre of the ring with the outcome still hanging in the balance.

When the dust settled, judges scored the bout 115–113 twice for Alvarez, and 114–114 even. The decision was met with debate, as 10 of 18 media outlets had scored the fight for Golovkin. Nevertheless, Alvarez walked away with the win and the unified middleweight crown, ending GGG’s long-standing reign.

Statistically, Golovkin out landed Álvarez 234 to 202 in total punches, but Canelo landed at a higher percentage and led in power shots across nine rounds.

Controversy aside, both men gave everything in a bout worthy of Ring Magazine Fight of the Year honours. And for fans, one thing was clear—the stage was already being set for a trilogy.

Las Vegas witnessed a dramatic collision of styles and weight ambitions as Saul “Canelo” Álvarez defended his WBC, Ring Magazine and lineal middleweight titles against Amir “King” Khan on 7 May 2016. Staged as the inaugural major sporting event at the brand-new T-Mobile Arena, the night carried the charge of national pride, contrasting styles, and the curiosity of seeing the Briton leap two weight divisions to meet one of boxing’s most formidable champions at a 155-pound catchweight.

Both men arrived following an international press tour that stretched from London to New York to Los Angeles, and the global anticipation was unmistakable. Khan, entering as the former two-division champion, brought his trademark speed and mobility into a daunting assignment. Álvarez, the more seasoned campaigner at the weight, stepped in for his first defence since taking the middleweight crown.

Khan opened the contest with a brisk tempo, springing around the ring and throwing rapid jabs designed to disrupt Álvarez’s rhythm. The Mexican champion probed cautiously at first, targeting the body with measured intent while trying to time the swifter man. Khan found early success with sharp rights and combinations that flickered off Álvarez’s guard and occasionally pierced through it. For several rounds his footwork forced Álvarez to reach, lunge or swing wide, with the champion unable to land the trademark hooks that usually dictate his pace.

By the third, Khan’s speed appeared to unsettle Álvarez, who pressed forward but struggled to trap his opponent for sustained exchanges. The Briton’s confidence grew as he threaded together jabs, counters and well-angled attacks. Álvarez’s right eye began to swell during these passages, a testament to Khan’s crisp accuracy.

Yet the defending champion never drifted from his strategy. He persisted with punishing digs to the ribs, each one thrown with the patience of a fighter who knew time and weight were on his side. Gradually, those blows began to reduce Khan’s movement. Subtle signs emerged in the fifth: Khan’s darting steps became slightly more laboured, and Álvarez started to close the distance with a calmer certainty.

In the sixth, the momentum swung decisively. Khan, still working to keep Álvarez off balance with jabs, was drawn into reacting to a feint downstairs. As he shifted his weight, Álvarez unleashed a thunderous overhand right. It landed flush, flooring Khan instantly and bringing referee Kenny Bayless and ringside medical staff into immediate action. The bout was waved off at 2:37 of the round, sealing a knockout victory of chilling clarity.

It was a reminder of the brutal margins at elite level. For long spells Khan’s ambition and speed created a compelling narrative, but Álvarez’s timing, power and composure ultimately proved decisive. In the end, the middleweight champion retained his crown with a finish that will be revisited for years whenever great one-punch knockouts are discussed. And so the night concluded with Saul Canelo Álvarez and Amir Khan linked in a bout that showcased daring, drama and the unforgiving nature of world-level boxing.

On 9 May 2015, Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, roared to life as Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez delivered a knockout masterclass, dismantling James Kirkland in just three savage rounds. The bout, broadcast live on HBO, confirmed the Mexican star’s status as boxing’s next great attraction, thrilling more than 40,000 fans in the stadium and over two million watching at home.

Álvarez entered the contest with momentum from his tactical victory over Erislandy Lara the previous summer. Negotiations with Miguel Cotto had collapsed, leaving Kirkland—a brawler with 28 stoppages in 33 wins—as the chosen opponent. The “Mandingo Warrior” was expected to bring chaos from the opening bell, and he did not disappoint.

Kirkland launched forward in round one, firing punches in bunches. For a moment, the Texan had the Guadalajara native pinned on the ropes. But Canelo’s composure was unshaken. A perfectly timed right hand staggered Kirkland, and moments later he was floored heavily. The Houston crowd erupted as the underdog hauled himself back to his feet, but the tide had already turned.

Round two saw more of the same ferocity. Kirkland, ever brave, pressed forward, yet Álvarez’s counters were surgical. Crisp hooks to the body buckled Kirkland’s legs, while uppercuts ripped through his guard. The Mexican’s accuracy was remarkable—connecting with 58% of his shots—while Kirkland’s wild attacks often found only air. Still, the Texan refused to yield, throwing back furiously despite the punishment.

The finale came midway through round three. Álvarez first dropped Kirkland with a venomous right uppercut. The American rose, eyes clear but legs betraying him. Then, as Kirkland attempted to launch another assault, Canelo slipped inside and uncorked a thunderous right cross. The punch twisted Kirkland’s frame mid-swing, sending him crashing flat to the canvas. Referee John Schorle waved it off instantly, sparing further damage.

The official time was 2:19 of the third round. Kirkland required medical attention and was later taken to hospital for precautionary scans, admitting afterwards he had no memory of the finish.

For Álvarez, the victory was more than just another notch on his record. It marked the first fight of his lucrative HBO deal and reaffirmed his drawing power. The broadcast drew the network’s highest ratings of 2015, peaking at nearly 2.3 million viewers.

Canelo had promised fireworks, and he delivered in emphatic fashion. The performance showcased not only his concussive power but also his poise under fire—a blend that cemented his reputation as Mexico’s new superstar.

In Houston that night, Kirkland fought bravely but was simply outgunned. Álvarez, calm amid the storm, wrote another chapter in his rise towards boxing immortality.

An 18-year-old Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez continued his breathtaking rise through the welterweight ranks with a first-round technical knockout of Antonio Fitch at the Foro Scotiabank in Mexico City, capturing the vacant NABF welterweight title in just one minute and 52 seconds of explosive action.

The Guadalajara prodigy, already carrying an unblemished record of 23 wins and a draw into this contest, required little time to bring the curtain down on a fight that many had hoped would provide a sterner examination of his considerable gifts. Instead, it served as yet another emphatic demonstration that Mexican boxing was nurturing something quite exceptional in the redheaded youngster from Jalisco.

Fitch, fighting out of Cancún, Quintana Roo, entered the bout with a respectable record of 12 victories against a single defeat, with ten of those wins coming inside the distance. He had been trained at Cuban boxing camps and arrived in the capital having not fought in Mexico City since March 2006, making his return to the national stage one of the notable storylines heading into the evening. Managed by the experienced Poncho, who had spent many years promoting fights in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Fitch was considered a credible opponent for the young champion.

What transpired, however, was a performance from Álvarez of startling ferocity and precision. Working behind a sharp jab, the young Guadalajaran established his range before unleashing a left hook to the jaw that opened up his assault entirely. Fitch, to his credit, sought to use his reach advantage and attempted to keep the Mexican honest at longer range, but Álvarez’s combination punching proved far too swift and powerful for the challenger to withstand. The referee intervened promptly and correctly, with Fitch unable to continue.

The victory followed a similarly devastating display the previous December, when Álvarez had stopped Raúl Pinzón in the opening round in Miami to retain his WBA Fedecentro welterweight title. That performance had taken two minutes and 30 seconds; this one required even less. The pattern of behaviour from the young champion was becoming impossible to ignore — opponents were simply being overwhelmed by a combination of hand speed, timing, and raw hitting power that belied his teenage years.

What struck seasoned observers most forcefully was not merely the result but the manner of it. Álvarez displayed a composure and technical understanding in Mexico City that night far beyond what might ordinarily be expected of a fighter of his age and experience. His footwork, his guard, the economy of his movement — all spoke of a young man who had absorbed his training thoroughly and was beginning to express it on the grandest of stages.

The NABF welterweight title represented meaningful silverware and a significant step forward in a career that was clearly building momentum with every passing month.

In the final reckoning, Saúl Álvarez’s clinical dismantling of Antonio Fitch was the performance of a young man utterly certain of his own ability, and the capacity crowd at the Foro Scotiabank witnessed a champion-in-waiting who was rapidly running out of domestic obstacles capable of testing him.

On 15 December 2018, Mexico’s Canelo Álvarez added another accolade to his glittering career, dismantling Britain’s Rocky Fielding inside three rounds to seize the WBA (Regular) super-middleweight crown in New York.

For Álvarez, already a superstar following his narrow victory over Gennadiy Golovkin three months earlier, the bout carried historic weight. Not only did it mark his debut at Madison Square Garden, but it also launched his record-breaking contract with streaming service DAZN — a five-year, $365 million agreement designed to make him the face of its boxing output.

Fielding entered as champion, having shocked Tyron Zeuge in Germany earlier that year. The Liverpudlian, however, was seen as a sizeable underdog against a fighter widely regarded as one of the sport’s elite. His advantages in height and reach were evident during the build-up, yet once the opening bell sounded, they counted for little.

Álvarez, weighing a career-heaviest 167.4lbs, targeted the body with ruthless precision from the start. A vicious left hook sank into Fielding’s ribs in the first round, forcing the Briton to his knee. The pattern was set. Each time Fielding attempted to assert his jab or fire combinations, Álvarez closed the distance and punished him with heavy hooks downstairs.

The second round brought more of the same. Another crunching blow to the midsection floored Fielding for the second time, and though he bravely rose, the signs of damage were clear. Fielding’s punches landed, but lacked the authority to deter Álvarez’s march forward.

By the third, the contest had become one-sided. A right hand to the head dropped Fielding again before yet another body shot sealed his fate. Referee Ricky Gonzalez halted proceedings at 2 minutes 38 seconds, sparing the champion further punishment. The official judges were not required.

Statistics reflected the gulf in class. According to CompuBox, Álvarez connected with 73 of 141 punches (52 per cent), including 35 to the body. Fielding landed just 37 of 183 (20 per cent).

The victory crowned Álvarez as a three-weight world champion, joining an exclusive list of Mexican fighters to achieve the feat. For Fielding, it was a painful lesson at the highest level, though he showed courage in standing and trading with one of the sport’s finest technicians.

Beyond the ring, the result underscored Álvarez’s status as boxing’s premier attraction. A sell-out crowd of 20,112 roared his every move, and the performance demonstrated that whether at middleweight or super-middleweight, his timing, accuracy, and ferocity remain among the very best in the world.

Álvarez had promised to chase greatness. In New York, he delivered emphatically — and history will record this as the night he conquered a third weight class in emphatic style.
