Chris Billam-Smith vs Richard Riakporhe (2) 15.06.2024
Chris Billam-Smith successfully defended his WBO cruiserweight title for the second time, securing a decisive victory over Richard Riakporhe at Selhurst Park. This win marked a significant moment for Billam-Smith as he avenged his previous defeat to Riakporhe from July 2019.
Their first encounter in 2019 saw Riakporhe triumph via a split decision after ten rounds, including a notable seventh-round knockdown at the O2 Arena in London. Since that bout, Billam-Smith has climbed the ranks, capturing the world title last May with a majority decision win over Lawrence Okolie. He then defended his title last December, forcing Mateusz Masternak to retire after eight rounds.
Riakporhe, on his part, had been steadily advancing towards the world level, riding a five-fight knockout streak. The stage was set for an intense rematch.
The first three rounds were marked by a cautious and technical approach from both fighters, with the bout primarily being a battle of jabs. Each time either fighter managed to gain some momentum, it was quickly neutralized by clinching. Billam-Smith, however, appeared to be edging ahead, landing more effective blows and gaining the upper hand by the halfway mark.
The eighth round saw the action intensify, with Riakporhe landing a solid right hand, but Billam-Smith responded well, ensuring he ended the exchanges on top. Riakporhe came out aggressively in the ninth round, delivering a massive right hand that dislodged Billam-Smith’s gumshield. Despite this, Riakporhe couldn’t maintain the pressure, and Billam-Smith continued to be elusive and more precise with his punches in the championship rounds.
The final round saw Riakporhe’s hopes dashed as he was deducted a point for illegal use of the head. This penalty sealed his fate, and Billam-Smith retained his title with scores of 115-112, 115-112, and 116-111 from the judges.
This victory solidifies Chris Billam-Smith’s position as a top contender in the cruiserweight division, showcasing his resilience and skill in defending his WBO title.
