Jai Opetaia vs Jack Massey 12.10.2024

Jai Opetaia delivered a commanding performance in Riyadh as he halted Jack Massey in the sixth round to retain the IBF cruiserweight championship at the Kingdom Arena on 12 October 2024. In front of a packed Saudi crowd, the Australian champion produced one of the most complete displays of his career, breaking down a brave but outgunned challenger with sustained pressure and precision.

From the opening round, Opetaia set the tempo. His movement around the ring was sharp and economical, allowing him to dictate distance and prevent Massey from settling into any rhythm. The challenger, known for his toughness and willingness to engage, found himself constantly forced backwards as the champion claimed the centre of the ring and worked behind a varied attack.

Massey attempted to assert himself early, looking to use his size and strength to disrupt Opetaia’s flow. However, the champion’s footwork and timing ensured he was rarely caught clean. Short, well-chosen punches to both head and body steadily drained Massey’s energy, while Opetaia’s control of range limited the Briton’s opportunities to respond.

As the rounds progressed, the pattern became increasingly clear. Opetaia maintained a relentless pace without becoming reckless, mixing sharp shots upstairs with punishing work to the midsection. Massey showed his resilience, absorbing heavy punishment and continuing to press forward when possible, but the damage was beginning to tell. His face bore the marks of the champion’s accuracy, and his output slowed under the sustained pressure.

By the middle rounds, Opetaia was fully in command. Each exchange ended with the champion landing cleaner, more effective punches, while Massey struggled to mount any sustained offence. The Australian’s composure stood out, as he calmly dismantled his opponent rather than chasing a hurried finish.

The end came in the sixth round when Opetaia increased the intensity. A series of unanswered blows left Massey taking punishment without being able to fire back effectively. Recognising the toll it was taking, the referee stepped in to bring the contest to a halt, awarding Opetaia a stoppage victory and another successful title defence.

The win followed on from Opetaia’s previous outing earlier in 2024, when he beat Mairis Briedis on points. Against Massey, he went further, showcasing not just power, but patience and ring intelligence over multiple rounds.

Massey entered the fight on the back of a strong win over Isaac Chamberlain and had earned his position as mandatory challenger, but this was a level above. Despite his courage and durability, he was unable to cope with the champion’s consistency and accuracy across six demanding rounds.

In Riyadh, Jai Opetaia underlined his status at the top of the cruiserweight division with a clinical performance, while Jack Massey earned respect for his grit in defeat, even as the gulf in class became impossible to ignore.
