On 15 December 2018, Mexico’s Canelo Álvarez added another accolade to his glittering career, dismantling Britain’s Rocky Fielding inside three rounds to seize the WBA (Regular) super-middleweight crown in New York.

For Álvarez, already a superstar following his narrow victory over Gennadiy Golovkin three months earlier, the bout carried historic weight. Not only did it mark his debut at Madison Square Garden, but it also launched his record-breaking contract with streaming service DAZN — a five-year, $365 million agreement designed to make him the face of its boxing output.

Fielding entered as champion, having shocked Tyron Zeuge in Germany earlier that year. The Liverpudlian, however, was seen as a sizeable underdog against a fighter widely regarded as one of the sport’s elite. His advantages in height and reach were evident during the build-up, yet once the opening bell sounded, they counted for little.

Álvarez, weighing a career-heaviest 167.4lbs, targeted the body with ruthless precision from the start. A vicious left hook sank into Fielding’s ribs in the first round, forcing the Briton to his knee. The pattern was set. Statistics reflected the gulf in class. According to CompuBox, Álvarez connected with 73 of 141 punches (52 per cent), including 35 to the body. Fielding landed just 37 of 183 (20 per cent).

The victory crowned Álvarez as a three-weight world champion, joining an exclusive list of Mexican fighters to achieve the feat. For Fielding, it was a painful lesson at the highest level, though he showed courage in standing and trading with one of the sport’s finest technicians.

Beyond the ring, the result underscored Álvarez’s status as boxing’s premier attraction. A sell-out crowd of 20,112 roared his every move, and the performance demonstrated that whether at middleweight or super-middleweight, his timing, accuracy, and ferocity remain among the very best in the world.
